<p>It’s possible to put your best foot forward in any sport with the right footwear. Pete McCall, an exercise physiologist with the San Diego-based American Council on Exercise, offers some Shop Like the Pros tips for buying athletic shoes.</p>
<p>“Be honest about the activity you’re going to be doing. Shoes have become very specialized so it’s important to get a shoe that’s specifically designed for your activity,” said McCall, who most often wears Nike Free training shoes which retail for about $85.</p>
<p>Look for these qualities in a sport-specific shoe:</p>
<p>Walking shoes: Select a shoe with a lower heel (than a running shoe) and a low stable foot bed. The shoes should twist and bend at the forefoot, but not in the middle of the arch.</p>
<p>Running shoes: Runners need to have a raised heel to protect against impact. The sole should be flexible and bend at the ball of the foot, and the upper part should be made out of lightweight net or mesh.</p>
<p>Training shoes: Training shoes have multiple treads to perform various activities, with a broader toe cap and lower heel than a running shoe. Look for a mesh shoe with a flat foot bed and stability in the forefoot.</p>
<p>“Training shoes allow for more lateral movement than running shoes (which are made) for going forward,” said McCall, adding that wearing running shoes for lateral movement activities puts you at risk for ankle injuries.</p>
<p>Basketball shoes: Opt for high-tops for optimal support during jumping and leather uppers for lateral support.</p>
<p>Tennis shoes: These court shoes should be low to the ground and made out of leather for lateral support. There should be an ample toe protector and pivot points on the sole under the ball of foot.</p>
<p>Toning shoes: Don’t waste your money or time on the new rounded-sole toning shoes.</p>
<p>“We’ve done studies and there are no mechanical advantages to these shoes,” McCall said. “You’re better off in a shoe designed for walking.”</p>
<p>Some general athletic shoe shopping tips:</p>
<p>• If you’ve found a shoe that fits you and your sport well, checkout online vendors which may sell that same shoe for less money than brick-and-mortar stores, McCall suggests.</p>
<p>“You should be able to get a good quality shoe for between $50 and $85. There’s really no need to spend more than that,” he said.</p>
<p>• Shop by fit, not by size.</p>
<p>• Look for rule-of-thumb fit, with about a thumb’s width of space between the end of your big toe and the shoe.</p>
<p>• Try out the shoes in the store. Run, jump, pivot and kick in the shoes to see how they feel in action.</p>
<p>• Shoes should feel comfortable immediately.</p>
<p>• Stock up. If you find a pair of shoes that fit well, are comfortable and give you ample support for your sport, buy more.</p>
<p>“The companies are always changing or discontinuing shoe (models) so if you can afford it, buy two or three pair and put them in your closet until you need them,” McCall said.</p>

<p>Need another good reason to squeeze in a daily walk or sweat it out at the gym? Regular exercise bestows a wealth of benefits for the mind, body, and spirit — and along the way, it can perk up your love life.</p>
<p><strong>An Element of Excitement</strong></p>
<p>Comfortable routines aren’t all bad — but if the extent of your weekend fun is pizza and a DVD, re-ignite the flame by learning the two-step, going on a day hike, or enjoying a bike ride on a new trail.</p>
<p>Being active together through sports or fitness activities is a proven way to protect your relationship against boredom. One study found that married couples who experienced new and exciting activities together reported higher levels of relationship satisfaction compared with couples who shared only familiar or mundane activities.</p>
<p>Men tend to build bonds through shared activities rather than simply talking about their thoughts or feelings. Chances are that joining your guy for a run will bring you closer— and glean more conversation — than saying, “let’s talk.”</p>
<p><strong>Mood Matters</strong></p>
<p>Does fatigue or the blues ever dampen your desire and interfere with fun together-time? Moderate exercise — like walking or biking — can boost mood for up to 12 hours. Even 10 minutes of exercise cultivates feelings of calmness, relaxation and well-being — and that bodes well for relationships and romance. Regular physical activity is often included in treatment plans for mild depression and anxiety — because it promotes good brain health and elevates mood.</p>
<p>To brighten your mood all day — and into the evening —grab a jump rope and enjoy a quick workout. Or go for a walk during a work break. Small investments in fitness and mood enhancement can really pay off — for both you and your partner.</p>
<p><strong>Better Body Image</strong></p>
<p>Exercise helps you feel better about your body, and that makes a big difference in the romance department. For college-age men, self-reported fitness levels significantly improve perception of sexual performance and desirability — and for women, the same is true for perceived desirability. A study of female breast cancer survivors found those who exercised regularly reported significantly better body image and perceived sexual attractiveness — along with markedly higher energy and less fatigue and depression than sedentary subjects.</p>
<p>Fitness may also help cultivate a more fulfilling sex life in older adults —a survey of active members of a fitness association linked higher fitness levels with more frequent sexual activity. Higher fitness levels were also linked with greater sexual satisfaction in older men, but not in older women. Granted, the survey respondents self-selected and may have been healthier to begin with, but if there’s a possibility that exercise could enhance intimacy, why not give it a try?</p>
<p><strong>Enhanced Sexual Function</strong></p>
<p>Too much exercise can result in overtraining, fatigue, and reduced sex drive, but the right amount can actually enhance sexual function. Health experts point out that exercise improves circulation all over the body, and that includes sexual organs. Several studies have shown that a combination of regular exercise and weight loss reduces erectile dysfunction in overweight and obese men. While one study showed an improved sexual response in women after 20 minutes of vigorous exercise, more research is needed to better understand the effect of exercise on female sexual function.</p>
<p><strong>Live Longer — Together</strong></p>
<p>Sharing an active lifestyle with someone you love can be one of life’s greatest pleasures. Raising children, maintaining a home, working, and travelling — everyday life pursuits — demand a significant amount of energy, strength, and endurance. When you’re fit, you can do more with less effort, and enjoy many activities that sedentary people can’t physically tolerate. Best of all, when you and your partner make regular exercise a priority, you reduce your health risks — and increase your odds of a long and healthy life together.</p>

<p>Usually, there&#8217;s a lot of family friction around the kind of memory loss that predates a diagnosis &#8212; arguments over who neglected to do something, missed appointments, or forgotten messages.</li>

Diners seated at tables in the middle of the room tend to be less comfortable and eat faster. The same holds true for uncomfortable chairs.</p>
<p>They also want you to eat more as well as faster. Warm colors &#8212; like red, orange and yellow &#8212; stimulate the need to eat.</p>
<p>CNN reports that:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“On hectic nights, the reservationist at Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto in New York City will inform diners that they need the table back in 90 minutes for the next party.If you lurk over your digestif too long, chef Cesare Casella will place your name on Salumeria&#8217;s ‘no salami’ list.”</em></p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>Many coffee drinkers enjoy the taste. And for those who don’t, there are countless addi­tives to mask the flavor &#8212; like sweeteners, milk, and chocolate syrup to name just a few. The list of coffee “enhancers” is limited only by your imagination.</p>
<p>The other major reason people drink coffee is for a caffeine boost. Many people swear they can’t get going in the morning without a cup of coffee &#8212; or several. They feel physically tired and mentally foggy without their morning brew.</p>
<p>Most regular coffee drinkers argue their habit isn’t doing them any harm. In fact, they’ll point to reports touting the health benefits of coffee, citing studies that claim regular consumption reduces the risk for heart disease and diabetes, for example.<a name="_ednref2" href="https://www.back2basicstraining.com/wp-admin/#_edn2">[2]</a></p>
<p>The problem, though, is while coffee’s effect on humans has been extensively re­searched for decades, there is still a great deal of controversy about what it really does to your health. The results of coffee studies often conflict, which is why you might read an article this week which completely contradicts the advice given in a report you read a month ago.</p>
<p>A study conducted in 2004<a name="_ednref3" href="https://www.back2basicstraining.com/wp-admin/#_edn3">[3]</a>, for example, indicated drinking coffee may negatively affect your short-term word recall. Not long after, a report was published which pointed to evi­dence that a couple cups of coffee per day could <strong><em>improve</em></strong> your short-term memory<a name="_ednref4" href="https://www.back2basicstraining.com/wp-admin/#_edn4">[4]</a>. This is but one example of many which points to the conflicting information regularly published about the effects of coffee on your body.</p>
<p>Researchers can’t seem to pinpoint exactly how coffee acts to allegedly reduce the risk of certain diseases, but they suspect it has something to do with the anti-inflammatory properties of the antioxidants in coffee.</p>
<p>The simple fact that remains however is that, coffee is <strong><em>not</em></strong> good for you and it’s <strong><em>not</em></strong> a health food, as some published re­ports would have you believe. There are much better, less risky ways to achieve any professed benefits of coffee consumption. Don’t use pro-coffee reports or propaganda as an excuse to hang onto your coffee habit!</p></blockquote>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">The Truth: Coffee Can Wreck Your Health</span></strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Among the typical health claims about coffee is it decreases the risk of developing cer­tain cancers and diabetes. However, it <em>increases</em> your risk for stomach cancer and leu­kemia. Just like with most drugs, there are perceived benefits &#8212; and then there are the side effects which often render the “cure” worse than the disease.</p>
<p>Coffee can also<a name="_ednref5" href="https://www.back2basicstraining.com/wp-admin/#_edn5">[5]</a>:</p>
<ul>
<li>Interfere with your body’s ability to use water, and promote fluid loss</li>
<li>Raise your cholesterol</li>
<li>Send your insulin levels out of control</li>
<li>Contribute to rheumatoid arthritis and stroke</li>
<li>Damage your blood vessels</li>
<li>Increase your risk of heart disease</li>
</ul>
<p>Coffee interferes with your body’s ability to use folate, and vitamins B12 and B6. Your body needs these nutrients in order to keep your homocysteine level in the healthy range. Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with a wide range of serious, even life-threatening conditions.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Pesticide Exposure</span></strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Chances are the coffee you drink is made from beans grown outside this country.</p>
<p>Coffee beans are known to be a heavily sprayed crop, and the U.S. has limited input and control over the type and quantity of pesticides used in the countries from which we import.</p>
<p>Aside from the damage coffee alone can do, pesticides are contributors to a wide range of health problems, including prostate and other cancers, Parkinson’s disease, and even miscarriages.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Metabolic Damage</span></strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Coffee stimulates your adrenals &#8212; the hormones that activate your fight or flight re­sponse. If your adrenal hormones are stimulated too often, which is bound to happen if you are a daily coffee drinker, your adrenal glands may eventually burn out.</p>
<p>When your adrenals no longer function effectively, your body will go in search of a re­placement hormone &#8212; which happens to be progesterone.</p>
<p>Progesterone has its own full-time job to do, part of which is to keep your body’s estro­gen in balance. As your progesterone is used up compensating for your exhausted ad­renals, you run the risk of becoming estrogen dominant.</p>
<p>Estrogen dominance can lead to osteoporosis.</p>
<p>Coffee also raises the acidity level of your blood, causing calcium to be pulled from your bones and teeth for use as a buffering agent. The combination of estrogen dominance and high blood acidity puts you at an even greater risk for osteoporosis. <li>A rise in blood pressure and stress hormone levels</li>
<li>Heart palpitations</li>
<li>A sensation of jitteriness and nervousness</li>
<li>Symptoms of anxiety, especially if you already have a panic or anxiety disorder</li>
<li>Depletion of iron and calcium levels in women</li>
</ul>

<p>It’s important to realize that any caffeine you ingest passes easily through the placenta to your unborn child. It is also transferred through breast milk, and stays in your body &#8212; and the body of your un­born child or infant &#8212; longer than average. <p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">A Much Healthier Alternative to Your Coffee Habit</span></strong></p>
<blockquote><p>As my regular readers know, my first recommendation for a healthy beverage is always pure water. It is by far the best choice you can make.</p>
<p>But if you’re looking to kick your coffee habit to improve your health, a cup of high-qual­ity green tea can be a great alternative as a warm, soothing morning beverage.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Green Tea vs. Black Tea</span></strong></p>

Symptoms may include bone pain, calcified ligaments, bone spurs, fused vertebrae, and difficulty moving your joints. <p>EGCG appears to decrease the production of the protein beta-amyloid, which can over accumulate in your brain, resulting in nerve damage and memory loss over time &#8212; a condition related to Alzheimer’s disease.</p>
<p>When researchers injected pure EGCG into mice genetically programmed to develop Alz­heimer’s, results showed a decrease of as much as 54 percent in the plaque which clogs the brains of Alzheimer sufferers.<a name="_ednref16" href="https://www.back2basicstraining.com/wp-admin/#_edn16">[16]</a> This is a promising finding that demonstrates the potential for EGCG as a weapon against the growing scourge of Alzheimer’s dis­ease.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Your Choice of Green Tea Makes All the Difference</span></strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Given the healthful properties of green tea, I’m comfortable this is a drink you can con­sume in moderation &#8212; especially as an alternative to coffee.</p>
<p>Keep in mind, though, pure water is what your body was designed to drink. You don’t want to get too far away from this basic health principle. Stick to clean spring water and filtered water.</p>
<p>I do not recommend either tap or distilled water, and it’s im­portant to avoid fluoridated water as well.</p>
<p>Next to pure water, I believe a high-quality green tea is a nutritious choice.</p>
<p>A cup of green tea supplies about 20-35 mcg of EGCG. Much of the research done on the health benefits of green tea has been measured at three cups per day, so that’s a good num­ber to keep in mind.</p>
<p>If you enjoy green tea &#8212; especially if you’re looking for a healthy substitute for your cof­fee habit – add a few cups to your day. Make sure not to counter the benefits derived from your tea by adding sugar, milk, or other “embellishments.” Drink your green tea straight.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Make Sure Your Green Tea is Green</span></strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Many green teas have been oxidized, which takes away much of the health benefits de­rived from drinking them.</p>
<p>If your green tea is brown, it has likely been oxidized.</p>
<p>What you want is green tea that’s actually green in color. Ideally, you want green tea which contains the entire ground tea leaf. <a href="http://products.mercola.com/green-tea/">Matcha tea</a> is what I prefer. It is of such high quality it can contain <strong>over 100 times the EGCG found in regular brewed green tea</strong>!</p>

<blockquote><p>The numerous and glowing reports of the health benefits of green tea have unfortu­nately created a market for green tea “energy drinks,” which are being promoted as “natural” weight loss products.</p>
<p>Don’t believe it!</p>
<p>The idea that a product created in a laboratory using a mixture of chemicals, sweeten­ers, and caffeine is “natural” or healthy is simply ridiculous. Tossing in some green tea doesn’t make it any less so.</p>
<p>If you want to drink green tea for its health benefits, stick to the real thing.</p>
<p>If you want to lose weight, do it safely by optimizing your diet, exercising regularly, and getting good quality sleep.</p>
<p>For a cool, refreshing, healthy green tea beverage, try the following:</p></blockquote>

<p>Even one cup of coffee a day can create an addiction. Withdrawal symptoms can in­clude:</p>
<ul>
<li>Headache</li>
<li>Drowsiness and fatigue</li>
<li>Irritability</li>
<li>Depression</li>
<li>Trouble concentrating</li>
<li>Flu-like feelings of nausea and muscle pain</li>
</ul>
<p>In order to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, you should consider tapering off your coffee habit &#8212; especially if you drink several cups per day.</p>
<p>If you want to quit drinking coffee gradually, there are steps you can take during the withdrawal process that will reduce the harmful effects of the coffee you are still con­suming:</p>

<p>If you use coffee as a crutch to get a quick burst of energy, remember that cultivating a healthy body and mind supplies all the power you need to get through your day. The jolt you receive from a cup of coffee is not only temporary, it’s also depleting your energy stores in the long term, and very likely wreaking havoc on your body in other ways as well.</p>
<p>I hope I’ve given you plenty of incentive to quit your coffee addiction once and for all, and replace it with beverages that can improve your health and prevent disease. You’ll be pleasantly surprised, once you make the change to healthier beverages, how much better and genuinely energetic you feel.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Before you reach for expensive over-the-counter or prescription allergy remedies, you might want to try an inexpensive alternative treatment that really seems to work: nasal irrigation, or washing out your nose once or twice daily with warm salt water. Most medical studies on nasal irrigation for allergies are rather positive, and there&#8217;s little risk and little expense in trying.</p>
<p>With the recent activity of high winds you may be suffering from all the pollen in the air. That&#8217;s the same yellowish dust that coats your car and fills your nasal passages, causing enough irritation to trigger an allergic reaction. Nasal irrigation simply washes away the irritants causing the allergy symptoms.</p>
<p>Many medical institutions, such as the Mayo Clinic, advocate the use of nasal irrigation. The most recent study appeared in January 2009, with the 200 patients in the study reporting some relief of symptoms from twice daily irrigations.</p>
<p>To try it, you can invest two dollars in a bulb syringe. or you can buy a neti pot, which looks like a little oil lamp, often used by yoga devotees. Nasal irrigation is known as jala neti in the ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda</p>

<p>The cover story of the August 9, 2009, issue of <em>Time</em> magazine featured an article entitled, “<a target="_blank" href="http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1914857-1,00.html">Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin</a>.” In this piece, author John Cloud made several inaccurate and unsubstantiated claims regarding the value of exercise, particularly as it relates to weight loss. What follows is a summary of some of the most misleading assertions made in this highly publicized article, as well as the American Council on Exercise’s response to these assertions:</p>
<ul style="list-style-type: disc">
<li style="margin-bottom: 2em">First and foremost, the article categorically implies that exercise has no meaningful role in weight loss. Such a conclusion is as false as it is reckless. The author’s “evidence” is the fact that he has “gut fat that hangs over his belt when he sits,” despite maintaining a regular exercise habit. In all likelihood, his unwanted abdominal girth is probably a by-product of genetics and/or consuming more calories than he expends.</li>
<li style="margin-bottom: 2em">Weight loss and maintenance are a matter of simple accounting that is dependent upon energy balance. In order for weight loss to occur, individuals must burn more calories than they consume. Regrettably, many individuals who regularly exercise are unable to meet their weight-loss goals because they eat too much. In reality, however, their “personal weight situation” and overall health profile would be far worse were it not for the extra calories they expend while exercising.</li>
<li style="margin-bottom: 2em">An overwhelming body of scientific evidence exists that confirms the positive role that exercise plays in weight loss and maintenance (Hill and Wyatt, 2005; Jakicic and Gallagher, 2003; Jakicic et al., 2001). These findings refute the notion (advanced by the author) that exercise impairs weight-loss efforts by substantially and uncontrollably increasing appetite. Recent research suggests that appetite may be suppressed for 60-90 minutes following vigorous exercise by affecting the release of certain appetite hormones. It also appears that aerobic exercise is more effective at suppressing appetite than non-aerobic forms of exercise (Broom et al., 2009). In general, individuals who participate in moderate exercise tend to eat approximately the same number of calories (or only slightly more) than they would if they did not exercise. Elite-level athletes typically consume high volumes of food after their exercise workouts, but they almost always expend more calories than they consumed (Blundell and King, 1999). It is important to keep in mind, however, that appetite is influenced several factors and is a very complex process making it difficult to generalize the impact of exercise on appetite. The bottom-line is that exercise and diet go hand-in-hand with successful weight management.</li>
<li style="margin-bottom: 2em">Surprisingly (and disappointingly) the author failed to mention the tremendously important role that exercise plays in the maintenance of weight loss. According to data from the renowned National Weight Control Registry, consistent exercise participation is the single best predictor of long-term weight maintenance. In others words, if individuals want to be successful in getting off the weight-loss rollercoaster (i.e., repeatedly losing weight and regaining it), they need to regularly engage in physical activity.</li>
<li>Another particularly bothersome portion of the article was the misleading comments regarding children and physical activity. A preponderance of evidence shows that kids are often less active after school, not more active as the article implies. As such, community-based youth fitness programs and high-quality school physical education programs are much needed. The available statistics support the fact that well-designed fitness programs aimed at encouraging children to be more active and maintain a healthy body weight remain a significant priority (HHS, 2008).</li>
</ul>
<p>Needless to say, readers of this article in <em>Time </em>are likely to conclude that exercise is of little to no benefit to them, which makes its publication in such a high profile and respected magazine so disappointing—and possibly even dangerous. Given the enormous economic costs associated with obesity (approximately $147 billion annually), we should be promoting and advocating scientifically proven healthful behaviors like regular exercise participation whenever and wherever we can. Beyond its weight-control benefits, regular exercise provides a plethora of health benefits, including the treatment and prevention of a wide variety of chronic illnesses (heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, certain types of cancer, to name a few), an enhancement of psychological health and well-being, and an improvement in the overall quality of life throughout the human lifespan.</p>

<p class="CommonTextStyle">As more and more bugs, including some truly nasty bacteria, become impervious to the effects of drugs it’s necessary to come up with effective alternatives.</p>
<p>Fortunately, while some germs may be outpacing our ability to kill them, we’re not completely defenseless. In fact, there are plenty of things we can do to slow their spread.</p>
<p>Here are some of Health.com’s better suggestions:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Fight the flu with vitamin D.</strong> 1,500 to 2,000 I.U. of vitamin D not only bolsters the immune system but also may help prevent infection. (PLEASE NOTE: this is NOT my recommendation, but abstracted from the article on Health.com. I believe most adults need 5,000-8,000 units of vitamin D per day)</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Wash your hands.</strong> The flu virus can live for up to 72 hours on surfaces. That makes hand-washing the most effective daily defense. Wash briskly with soap and water for 30 seconds.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Cover up.</strong> Bandage all cuts, even paper cuts and blisters.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Stay clean at the hospital.</strong> If you’re visiting a hospital, wash yourself and your clothes right after. Don’t use bar soap in any hospital bathroom or set your purse on the floor. And researchers recently found that one in three stethoscopes used by emergency-medical-service providers was contaminated with MRSA &#8212; ask your doctor to swab his scope with alcohol.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>De-germ the gym.</strong> Use a disinfectant wipe to swab the handlebars of equipment, and drape a clean towel over shared yoga mats and sauna and locker room benches.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Don’t share.</strong> You’re at increased risk of MRSA if you share razors, soap, towels, or other personal items.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Be proactive.</strong> If you have to take an antibiotic, take a probiotic at the same time to build up the healthy bacteria in your gut.</li>
</ul>

<p>James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health, has expressed shock and outrage after reading a new report from scientists outlining the dangers of the artificial sweetener Splenda (sucralose).</p>
<p class="CommonTextStyle">In animals examined for the study, Splenda reduced the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50 percent, increased the pH level in the intestines, contributed to increases in body weight and affected P-glycoprotein (P-gp) levels in such a way that crucial health-related drugs could be rejected.</p>
<p>The P-gp effect could result in medications used in chemotherapy, AIDS treatment and treatments for heart conditions being shunted back into the intestines, rather than being absorbed by the body.</p>
<p>According to Turner, &#8220;The report makes it clear that the artificial sweetener Splenda and its key component sucralose pose a threat to the people who consume the product. Hundreds of consumers have complained to us about side effects from using Splenda and this study &#8230; confirms that the chemicals in the little yellow package should carry a big red warning label.&#8221;<br />

<p class="abstract">Splenda is comprised of the high-potency artificial sweetener sucralose (1.1%) and the fillers maltodextrin and glucose. Splenda was administered by oral gavage at 100, 300, 500, or 1000 mg/kg to male Sprague-Dawley rats for 12-wk, during which fecal samples were collected weekly for bacterial analysis and measurement of fecal pH. After 12-wk, half of the animals from each treatment group were sacrificed to determine the intestinal expression of the membrane efflux transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and the cytochrome P-450 (CYP) metabolism system by Western blot. The remaining animals were allowed to recover for an additional 12-wk, and further assessments of fecal microflora, fecal pH, and expression of P-gp and CYP were determined. At the end of the 12-wk treatment period, the numbers of total anaerobes, bifidobacteria, lactobacilli, Bacteroides, clostridia, and total aerobic bacteria were significantly decreased; however, there was no significant treatment effect on enterobacteria. Splenda also increased fecal pH and enhanced the expression of P-gp by 2.43-fold, CYP3A4 by 2.51-fold, and CYP2D1 by 3.49-fold. Following the 12-wk recovery period, only the total anaerobes and bifidobacteria remained significantly depressed, whereas pH values, P-gp, and CYP3A4 and CYP2D1 remained elevated. These changes occurred at Splenda dosages that contained sucralose at 1.1-11 mg/kg (the US FDA Acceptable Daily Intake for sucralose is 5 mg/kg). Evidence indicates that a 12-wk administration of Splenda exerted numerous adverse effects, including (1) reduction in beneficial fecal microflora, (2) increased fecal pH, and (3) enhanced expression levels of P-gp, CYP3A4, and CYP2D1, which are known to limit the bioavailability of orally administered drugs.</p>
